Collegiate Shag Troupe Open Auditions
Collegiate Shag Troupe Open Auditions
Need both guys and girls. (Asking for 3 new guys and 2 girls)
Time/Location : 26 April, 7-9PM. 320 W 37th Street, between 8th and 9th. 7th floor, buzzer #14
The 212 Shag Masters performance crew out of NYC is auditioning new dancers to work on a high profile Collegiate Shag routine. (see about shag below) Performances will vary, but will include national swing competitions, local showings and venues, performing with swing bands, etc. Several national opportunities exist, and there is often television possiblity in the style.
The commitment is somewhat open depending on the number of people in the piece. Performances will be at a minimum of three couples, if we have five then we can schedule out people out if necessary. There is ongoing weekly practice sessions on Tuesday nights with opportunities to practice partnering, shag, and swing available at other times during the week. It is suggested that at a minimum you take the choreographer's monday night classes at Dance Manhattan. (team members are comped into the class.)
Previous swing partnering experience requested, but will train in all areas of advanced partnering, aerials, and both shag and swing styles. Candidate profiles need to include performance experience, strong core strength, fast reflexes, impeccable balance, and the ability to partner. Modern/rhythmic dancers seem to do well with this style.
About Shag : Collegiate Shag (known in the 30's as shag, more commonly referred to as collegiate shag now to differentiate it from other shag styles) is a high energy, rhythmic, fancy footwork, intricate, partnering style of swing dance popular during the 1920's through 1940's. It retains a lot of the advanced partnering feeling of swing, but uses a different framework of footwork and connections than swing does.
This group has experience in working with / training non-swing dancers. All principle dancers except the choreographer are trained modern/tap/jazz/ballet dancers.
At the moment this is a non paid opportunity.
Respond to email before attending please.
Thanks.
