Project Description
23 Skidoo
site-specific content from NYC's Flatiron Building
"Perhaps the most widely known story of the origin of the expression concerns the area around the triangular-shaped Flatiron Building. ...due to the shape of the building winds swirl around it. During the 1920s, groups of men would allegedly gather to watch women walking by have their skirts blown up, revealing legs, which were seldom seen publicly at that time. Local constables, when sometimes telling such groups of men to leave the area, were said to be "giving them the 23 Skidoo".
We will work with this image, yet in an abstraction & exaggerated form, researching the occurrence of a architectural structure giving rise to a movement image/story. This research also is concerned with a historical transformation between the relationship of men and woman over the past 100 or so years. The 'sketch' created for the Joyce will be a piece of the larger project which culminates around the actual Flatiron building this spring involving 200 + performers.
