GROUNDWORK RESIDENCY: Emerging Artist Space Grant and Career Development Intensive

 
The Cora Studio - home of the professional company Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance in Red Hook, Brooklyn - is offering a uniquely comprehensive residency experience that provides substantial support to four emerging choreographers who are in their first 5 years of making work in NYC.  Groundwork offers emerging artists who possess a distinctive choreographic vision and an interest in fulfilling that vision long-term space and mentorship to develop new work, networking opportunities and professional development focusing on the acquisition of vital skills that help ensure strong infrastructure, artistic longevity, financial sustainability and a sense of community in the field of dance.

From July to November 2013, each selected artist is provided with the following:

- 50 hours of rehearsal space at The Cora Studio, a 750 square foot unobstructed rehearsal space with sprung Marley floor, mirrors (with covers), high-ceilings and sound system.

- A private in-take consultation with Cora Artistic Director, Shannon Hummel and Managing Director, Megan Kennedy to assist each artist in outlining immediate and more long-term artistic and infrastructural goals. This session will be followed up with individual meetings between Hummel, Kennedy and each artist throughout the residency.

- A mandatory roundtable workshop (Monday, July 8 at 7pm) to assist artists in networking and accessing one another throughout the program and beyond;

- 2 informal showings and feedback sessions in at The Cora-Studio Theater;

- Enrollment in a 2-day intensive career development program focusing on the basics of managing a career in the field of dance. These workshops cover the basics of budgeting and accounting; marketing; fundraising; effective communication with dancers.  (Workshop dates: August 2 & 3 from 9am-4:30pm.)

-  2-3 performances of new work developed during the residency. (Each performance is split between two artists in The Cora Studio. Each artist may present up to 30 minutes of work. Tech/Dress/Performances will take place between October 20-27. Selected artists should not have showings of this work four weeks before or after this event.

- Access to Cora's Lighting Designer/Technical Director and Marketing Staff in relationship to mounting the above production at The Cora Studio.

- Printed Marketing Materials, online and social media marketing of the performance event.

- Each artist leaves the residency with a written overview and plan prepared by Hummel, Kennedy and the artist; postcards, programs and other printed documentation related to the performance; and a complete collection of resources developed throughout the residency.

Guidelines:
- Applicants must be in their first 5 years of presenting their choreography in NYC. Choreography presented while enrolled in a university dance program does not count. Groundwork is not open to those currently enrolled in a college or university dance program.
- Applicants must reside in one of the 5 boroughs of NYC and pursuing a choreographic career in the field of dance.
- Applicants must have presented at least one choreographic work in NYC in the past year. Work can be any length and productions can be presented by a venue or self-produced.
- All disciplines of dance are encouraged to apply.

GROUNDWORKS RESIDENCY APPLICATION:

Please submit in writing the following information along with a $30 Application Fee by FRIDAY, JUNE 21 AT 5PM. If submitting via email, please attach as a PDF or Word document.

- Describe your current artistic vision or voice. Include a bit about your process. (600 words max)

- Please articulate how long you have been presenting work in NYC. (List the date, location of the first performance and last performance of your choreography. Please also list the title, duration, and cast size of the work(s) you presented at these performances.) Note: Performances while enrolled in a university dance program do not count. Groundwork is not open to those currently enrolled in a college or university dance program.)

 - Describe the work you envision creating during this residency and how it ties into where your are in your development as an artist and/or your overall artist vision. (600 words max)

 - Describe your current administrative structure. Be honest. If you have no structure and do all the "desk-work" yourself, say so. If you have others helping, describe their roles and what they do to assist you.

 - Describe any artistic and/or infrastructural goals you would like to achieve by participating in Groundwork (i.e.Why does this residency appeal to you and what do you want to get out of it?) (600 words max)

 - Provide a link to your most recent work. If you are sending your application in via snail-mail, you may include a DVD rather than a link, however, as DVD's often become damaged in transport, a link is preferred.

- Include a current bio (600 words max)

 - Include any marketing materials you might have related to your work. Press kit, articles, reviews, photos, etc. (Optional)

SUBMISSION INFO:
- Completed applications and $30 application fee are due by Friday, June 21 at 5pm. Late applications will not be considered. Applications may be submitted online or via snail mail.
- ONLINE SUBMISSION: Online applications may be submitted as a PDF or Word document via email to residency@coradance.org with "Groundwork" and the Artist's Name in the subject line. The $30 fee should be submitted online at www.coradance.org, click on "Donate Now", and on the payment/donation page write "Groundwork."
- SNAIL MAIL SUBMISSION: Snail mail applications and a $30 check made out to "Cora Inc." should be mailed to: The Cora Studio, 201 Richards Street, Box 5, Brooklyn NY 11231. Snail mail applications must be RECEIVED (not postmarked) by June 21.
- Selected artists will be notified by June 30. Residency begins July 8.
- IMPORTANT NOTE: Selected artists MUST attend a mandatory roundtable meeting and orientation on Monday, July 8 from 7-9pm and participate in Tech/Dress/Performances between October 20-27 with no other public performances or showings of this work in the NYC area four weeks before or after. Submitting an application means you are confirming your availability for these dates. Those who are unavailable should not apply.
