GROUNDWORK RESIDENCY: Emerging Artist Space Grant and Career Development Intensive

 

GROUNDWORKS RESIDENCY APPLICATION: The Cora Studio, home of the professional company Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance in Red Hook, Brooklyn , is offering a uniquely comprehensive residency experience that provides substantial support to 4-6 emerging choreographers who are in their first 5 years of making work in NYC. Groundwork offers artists who possess a distinctive choreographic vision and an interest in fulfilling that vision longterm substantial space to develop new work plus artistic and administrative mentorship to help ensure strong infrastructure, financial sustainability and a sense of community in the field of dance.

From January to November 2014, each selected artist is provided with the following:

- 75 hours of rehearsal space at The Cora Studio, a 750 square foot unobstructed rehearsal space with sprung Marley floor, mirrors (with covers), high-ceilings and sound system.

- A meet-and-greet roundtable (Thursday, January 16 at 7pm) to assist artists in networking and accessing one another throughout the program and beyond; - A private in-take consultation with Cora Artistic Director, Shannon Hummel and Managing Director, Megan Kennedy to assist each artist in outlining immediate and more long-term artistic and infrastructural goals. This session will be followed up with 1-2 individual meetings between Hummel, Kennedy and each artist throughout the residency.

- 2 informal showings/feedback sessions at The Cora-Studio Theater; Thursday, April 3, 7-9pm and Thursday, September 25, 7-9pm.

- Enrollment in an intensive career development workshop day focusing on the basics of managing a career in the field of dance. These workshops cover the basics of budgeting and accounting; marketing; fundraising; effective calendar planning. (Mandatory Workshop dates: August 10 from 9am-7:30pm.)

- 2-3 performances of 20-30 minutes of new work developed during the residency. (Each performance is split between two artists in The Cora Studio. Each artist MUST present 20-30 minutes of work. Tech/Dress/Performances will take place between November 8-16. Those applying should be available for all these dates before applying. Final artist lineup and schedule will be announced at the first roundtable meeting. Selected artists should not have showings of this work four weeks before or after this event.

- Access to Coras Lighting Designer/Technical Director and Marketing Staff in relationship to mounting the above production at The Cora Studio.

- Printed Marketing Materials, online and social media marketing of the performance event. Guidelines and Restrictions:

- Applicants must be in their first 5 years of presenting their choreography in NYC. Choreography presented while enrolled in a university dance program does not count. Groundwork is not open to those currently enrolled in a college or university dance program.

- Applicants must reside in one of the 5 boroughs of NYC and be pursuing a choreographic career in the field of dance.

- Applicants must have presented at least one choreographic work in NYC in the past year. Work can be any length and productions can be presented by a venue or self-produced.

- All disciplines of dance may apply with a few exceptions: Due to being a second floor studio, artists working in tap, flamenco or other highly percussive forms that require substantial stamping on the floor are restricted from applying.

- Artists must rehearse when the space is available. During the spring and fall, the space is available for rehearsals only at the following times: Monday through Fridays from 6am-2pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings generally beginning around 6pm; Saturdays from 12:30pm until midnight; All day on Sundays. Full days including mid and late afternoons are available in the summer months. Availability for meetings, informal showings and performance dates listed above should be confirmed before applying. Please DO NOT apply if you know you are not available for the Roundtable Meeting (January 16), the Professional Development Weekend (August 2-3) or the week of performance (November 8-16) as these are MANDATORY. Conflicts with showing dates may be worked around if possible but general availability during times listed above is expected from all those applying.

- Once selected, each artist must make a refundable deposit of $250 which will be returned to the artist in full, along with the $20 application fee, at the completion of the residency performances. Deposit is due at the first roundtable meeting January 16.

GROUNDWORKS RESIDENCY APPLICATION: Submit via email the following information along with a $20 Application Fee by FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22 AT 5PM. Please attach as a PDF or Word document.

- Describe your current artistic vision or voice. Include a bit about your process.(500 words max)

- Please articulate how long you have been presenting work in NYC. (List the date, location of the first performance and last performance of your choreography. Please also list the title, duration, and cast size of the work(s) you presented at these performances.)

-Note: Performances while enrolled in a university dance program do not count. Groundwork is not open to those currently enrolled in a college or university dance program.)

- Describe the work you envision creating during this residency and how it ties into where you are in your development as an artist and/or your overall artist vision. (500 words max)

- Describe your current administrative structure. Be honest. If you have no structure and do all the desk-work yourself, say so. If you have others helping, describe their roles and what they do to assist you. Describe any artistic and/or infrastructural goals you would like to achieve by participating in Groundwork (i.e. Why does this residency appeal to you and what do you want to get out of it?) (400 words max)

- Provide links to 1-2 samples of recent work (performed in the past 3 years). Each work sample should be no more than 12 minutes in length.

- Include a current bio (500 words max)

- Completed applications and $20 application fee are due by Friday, November 22 at 5 pm. Late applications will not be considered.

- ONLINE SUBMISSION: Online applications may be submitted as a PDF or Word document via email to residency@coradance.org with Groundwork and the Artists Name in the subject line. The $20 fee should be submitted online at www.coradance.org, click on Donate Now, and on the payment/donation page write Groundwork.

- Selected artists will be notified by December 15, 2013. Residency begins January 16, 2014.
