Mare Nostrum Elements’ Emerging Choreographer Series (ECS) is a guided 5-week intensive workshop aimed to provide 5/6 new choreographers with tools to create, develop and perform a new finished work or work in progress.

Following the structure of our signature method The Wave Within, selected participant will meet weekly to stimulate their inspiration, engage in our guided improvisation process, create new movement, share ideas and feedback with fellow participants. Each choreographer will also get 8 hours of free rehearsal space each week to work with dancers assisted by Nicola Iervasi and Kevin Albert.

Using tools from The Wave Within method Nicola and Kevin will help choreographers make fast, clear and smart choices to create sequences of movement, effectively assign movement to dancers, decide structure and length of the piece, edit and self direct the work in progress.

This fast-paced yet nurturing process will tremendously help the participants in making performance decisions so that their work connects effectively with the audience.

The Emerging Choreographer Series will culminate in a studio performance followed by a Q&A and a reception during which chorographers can mingle and get additional feedback and comments from audience members.

The Emerging Choreographer Series is made possible (in part) by the Queens Council on the Arts with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

While similar programs provide choreographers with management, marketing and networking skills, MNE’s Emerging Choreographer Series focuses on the artistic development and quality of the work, providing choreographer with a broader understanding of stage-craft making.

MARE NOSTRUM ELEMENTS’

The Wave Within – Active tools for performing artists

Mare Nostrum Elements founders – Italian performer Nicola Iervasi and American actor/director Kevin Albert – developed The Wave Within method in 2002, as a response to the difficulties that performers often experience when taking acting and dance classes separately.

The Wave Within is a four-step, performance-oriented workshop to help you find new inspiration as you strengthen your stage presence. Our process, utilizes a mix of Meisner and Grotowsky's acting techniques, contact improvisation, dance theater methods, and body conditioning techniques. We focus on the impact that each explored concept has upon you so that you build confidence and connect effectively with your audience.

THE 4-STEPS

1) Preparation -- customized warm up based on your needs

2) Exploration -- finding a personal movement

3) Reviewing -- bringing layers of meaning to your expression

4) Performance – enhancing the life of your personal, physical creation
