Amanda + James Dancer Audition - August 24

Amanda + James Dancer Audition - August 24 Photo by Mersiha Mesihovic

Amanda + James is looking for one or two dancers for its developing dance work, Ache. The audition will be held on Sunday August 24, 3:00-5:30. Please email amanda@amandaplusjames.com for the location - and feel free to ask any questions.

You will be joining two wonderfully talented female dancers who have developed the work along with the choreographer, Amanda Hameline. We are looking for dancers who are comfortable contributing their ideas and movement - who are as open to improvising and sharing their experiences as they are to learning new choreography.

Rehearsals will be held on Monday or Thursday evenings, with the option of turning one of these into a free class. The first set performance will be on November 9th, although there will also be performances in October and February. Ache is a work in progress that will develop into a longer, evening length piece and dancers will have the opportunity to also be involved in this extended project.

For more information check out amandaplusjames.com and the brief project description below!

___________

Ache started with the image of a woman, a clean table and a cake. The work combines these three elements to tell a story of desire. The woman enters a café, sits down, and is handed this too-large, decadent thing. It is one of those shiny, chocolate mousse cakes: solid, heavy and thick. She wanted it, but now that the whole big thing is in front of her she is stunned. Ache wavers with a pendulum-like energy, swinging between the extremes and lulls of emotion.

Desire is often a positive force. It forces us to love other people and create art and enjoy life. But there is also a shame associated with the emotion. A fear of hedonism can bleed into a productive pleasure, muddling and restraining the possibility of fulfillment. This struggle often occurs in private, there is a discomfort associated with delving into the mix of pleasure and shame associated with want. Yet it is not completely suppressible – the struggle reveals itself somewhere.
