Gibney Dance is pleased to announce a call for applications for 2015-16 Dance in Process Residencies, with generous support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Dance in Process (DiP) is the signature program of Gibney Dance’s Choreographic Center at 890 Broadway. DiP provides nuanced creative residency support for mid-career New York City-based artists by offering continuous, concentrated access to studio rehearsal space, a significant stipend, and technical and administrative resources.

Important dates for the 2015-2016 DiP Residences:

What is DiP?

Dance in Process (DiP) is Gibney Dance’s full-service residency program designed to provide experienced dance makers with the opportunity for creative immersion. Resident Artists will receive three weeks of exclusive, continuous access to Studio 3 (36’ x 36’) at our Choreographic Center at 890 Broadway. This time has been structured to provide a retreat-style, creative development period for artists and companies without the expense of housing or travel commonly associated with out-of-town residencies. Studio 3 is devoted to DiP because the space is large enough to accommodate the needs of working choreographers and companies, but intimate enough to allow for close and private work. The space was designed to be flexible and responsive to varied dance making processes. It comes equipped with a large white wall, blackout curtains for the mirrors and windows, marley or a wooden floor, projectors, tech equipment, and much more. These amenities and resources, coupled with the adjacent 10’ x 7’ production office provide a unique environment where Resident Artists can delve into their practice and work alongside collaborators or administrators without ever having to leave the studio. In collaboration with Gibney Dance staff, residency activity is tailored to fit individual artist’s needs.

Am I Eligible?

This program is limited to “mid-career” New York City-based dance artists who are in the “mid-stage” of the process for the project. Gibney Dance defines a “mid-career artist” as one who has established a significant body of work, either in terms of quantity over time or in terms of impact, momentum, or recognition; and the “mid-stage” of a process as the broad period of time after initial research, but prior to pre-production. While we recognize that these distinctions are limiting, we have designed the DiP residencies specifically for mid-career choreographers with a significant amount of choreographic experience and coordinating capacity. These parameters are meant to ensure that these resources are utilized to their fullest extent. We realize that there are many emerging artists worthy of support, and we encourage them to apply to our boo-koo space grant program.

Residency Scheduling: Resident Artists must be able to conduct a continuous three-week residency between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016. If the applicant is not able to participate in the DiP program during this period or feels that the DiP resources are not applicable to his or her current project or working process, please do not apply for this round. Please consider applying to the next round of DiP in April of 2016, which will support residencies from July 2016 – June 2017.

What Does The Program Provide?

The DiP Residencies will provide artists and their collaborators with:

Space – DiP Resident Artists will receive continuous access to Studio 3, a 36’ x 36’ studio space, and a production office at Gibney Dance at no charge.

Time – All DiP Residencies must be three consecutive weeks long. Space will be continuously available Monday through Friday from 8 am to 8 pm and Saturday from 9 am to 7 pm.

Resources – DiP Resident Artists will select from a Residency Resource Menu consisting of opportunities for public engagement; cultivation events; feedback sessions and mentoring; physical and technical resources; relationship building and technical assistance. Download the DiP Residency Resource Menu »

Fees – Resident Artists will be provided with a $2,500 stipend per residency week. Gibney Dance recognizes that this stipend will most likely not cover all of the Resident Artists’ costs.

What Are The Responsibilities Of The Resident Artists?

Artist must schedule and complete their residency between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016.

Resident Artists will complete an intake interview with the Residency Coordinator and sign a letter of agreement committing to make full use of the allocated time and resources.

Although DiP doesn’t require Resident Artists to present their work, Gibney Dance requests that each participate in some public manifestation of their process or experience, such as writing, an interview, showing or open rehearsal. Resident Artists are required to participate in an assessment of the DiP experience and its impact at the end of the residency and one year later.

All applicants will be asked to rank their preferred residency period as part of this application. Please consider the three-week residency period carefully. Gibney Dance will make every effort to adhere to the selected residency time frame but can’t guarantee that all first choices will be honored.
