Creative Class Dancer

Creative Class Dancer Eli Akerstein

Urbanity Dance is excited to announce auditions for its Creative Class for the 2016-2017 season on Sunday, August 7, 2016 from 3:30 PM - 5:30 PM at our South End studio (1180 Washington St., Boston, MA 02118).

What is the "Creative Class" and what are the sub-companies?

Urbanity Underground: This is Urbanity's successful female company, comprised of working professionals and college students. An "after work" competitive program, UU dancers can pursue dancing professionally while also working full-time jobs and pursuing graduate programs. Dancers have the option to apply for choreographic opportunities within the company. Dancers in Underground have a lot of flexibility and may choose which months and which shows they would like to participate in. Dancers pay membership dues to participate for the season, which can either be paid directly by the dancer or by raising the funds through an Urbanity fundraiser.

UrManity: This is Urbanity's project-based male pick-up company. Dancers can choose whether or not they would like to participate in each project as it comes up. Some projects are paid; others are volunteer. Dancers have diverse backgrounds including ballet, break dance, ballroom, and hip hop. There is no fee.

Junior Apprentices: This program is designed for high schoolers that would like to gain experience dancing in a professional company and add experiences to their resume. Dancers pay a season stipend, which covers the cost of costumes, choreography, performances, unlimited classes, and a monthly half-hour private coaching session.

Audition--What to Expect:

The audition works as a class, including ballet tendus, pirouettes, a modern release combo, leaps across the floor, improvisation exercises, and a final combination. Those who are asked to attend individually scheduled callbacks may be asked to learn additional phrase work, and/or perform a 1-2 minute solo (either choreographed or improvised). Please bring music and prepare ahead of time.
