Activist, Installation, and Improvised dances wanted for the Site Moves Series (LIC Arts Open 7)

Hello wonderful dancers!

We are seeking dances of 3 different categories to be a part of the Site Moves Series, which is an annual collection of curated dances for the LIC Arts Open (May 17-21) in Long Island City, Queens.  Primarily a visual arts open studios festival, the Site Moves Series is intended to enhance the gallery experience and encourage dialogue between visual arts and dance.  Deadline to submit work is Monday May 8th!

Apply here!

Performance Dates:

-Thursday May 18, 6-9pm at The Factory (Opening night event)

-Saturday & Sunday May 20-21, 1-5pm at The Factory or Wells Building (depending on what category you are submitting under)

Dances will be programmed to complement the various exhibitions and group shows in the LIC Arts Open across mediums of photographs, sculpture, statue, paintings, installation, mixed media, and drawings.  Performances are meant to be ongoing and simultaneous throughout the spaces.  Spaces are tall, open warehouse-style galleries with concrete flooring.  Please be prepared to adapt to changing factors such as space, wandering visitors, and other performances/sounds happening simultaneously.  If you are using music, you are responsible for your own portable speaker.  You will have an opportunity to scout the spaces before the performance dates.  For an idea of these spaces, please check out our FB albums of previous seasons here and here.

Dance Categories to Submit Under:

Activist:  Themes include gender bias, feminism/female body, outsiders/"freaks"/handicapped acceptance, conformity, bullying, Trump policies, refugees, surveillance state/self-identity, displacement/gentrification, environmental concerns, migration, community involvement for social change, or any other global or social issues you feel strongly about and want to express.

Installation:  Adaptive to space, can be roving (or not) through large floor plan, sculptural, audience interaction, or durational with the gallery experience in mind-- Paintings of all scales will be on the walls, as well as other visual installations and sculptures in the space.  Option to rove outdoors alongside building facade and alleyways (all in painted murals).

Improvisational:  Responding to surrounding artworks, space, and gallery visitors.  Option to rove outdoors alongside building facade and alleyways (all painted murals).  We ask that you describe a loose structure so we have an idea where and how your performance will best fit.

This free public event will be photographed and taped, and we can provide those materials to you once they are ready.  You are welcome to document it yourself as well.  There is often press coverage and you are encouraged to bring your business cards/promotional material.

Thank you and looking forward to an awesome event!
