"Simple Gifts" is a short silent film with an emphasis on communication through movement.

Synopsis

The paths of two strangers cross in the woods. 

They decide to travel together.  

They teach and help each other along the way.

Until one day their journey comes to its inevitable end.

 

Characters

Woman   Any ethnicity.  Mid 20’s to mid 30’s.         

She’s never had any responsibilities other than herself, and no one has ever felt responsible for her.  Trusting no one is the faith that’s kept her free and she’s proud of this.   This is her world, though she thinks she wants out of it.  Blindly focused on achieving her goal, she has no experience of anything more nuanced than the actions of subsistence.

 

Sharp and strong, self confident, natural, free spirited, impatient and determined.  She is also naïve, repressed and secretly scared, bewildered and lonely. 

 

Man    Any ethnicity.  Late 20’s to late 30s.

Leaving his past and responsibilities to others behind, he has brought himself to where he thinks he wants to be: lost and alone.  He is a stranger here and he feels it.   With only a tenuous goal to lead him on, he believes that he is someone who appreciates the journey more than the destination.  Whether or not that’s true remains to be seen.

                          

Self reliant but sensitive, inquisitive and patient, thoughtful and communicative.  He can also be selfish and demanding, and is secretly deeply unsure of himself.
