The Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning (JCAL) invites New York City-based dance companies to apply to an open call for the ninth annual Making Moves Dance Festival, a dance celebration to kick off JCAL’s 2018 dance season.  Set to be held September 22 & 23, 2018 at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center (JPAC), the Open Call requests choreographers working in all genres of dance apply to present their work and engage the communities representing the creative and cultural diversity that is NYC. Rehearsals and open showcases will be scheduled as part of JCAL/JPAC’s community outreach and 2018 dance season programs.

Making Moves offers five opportunities for dance companies:

A new opportunity for two emerging groups to perform a 12-15 minute piece at an outdoor presentation. Each group will receive a $125 stipend to present an existing work. (Afternoon)

An opportunity for up to four professional groups to perform a 20-30 minute piece at an outdoor presentation. Each group will receive a $400 stipend to present an existing work. (Afternoon)

An opportunity for up to four professional groups to perform a 15 minute piece each at an indoor stage presentation. Each group will receive a $500 stipend to present an existing work. (Evening)

An opportunity for a choreographer to create a 30-45 minute work, commissioned by JCAL, which will be presented at the evening presentation. The choreographer will receive a $3,500 stipend to create a new work and will have access to JCAL’s rehearsal space for up to 80 hours.

Dance artists and companies including, but not limited to: modern/contemporary, physical theater, ballet, jazz, hip hop, musical theatre and folk/world are invited to apply. Applications will be viewed by a panel of professionals and will be added to the archives of JCAL/JPAC for future curatorial consideration.

Each group can request to be considered for more than one opportunity, but each selected group will only be awarded one opportunity. All groups will be provided with access to the space for one dress rehearsal and one tech rehearsal prior to the day of the event. Each group will be offered marketing and access to the Community Engagement Program.

Program Timeline: Applications are due on Friday May 18th, 2018 at 5:00PM. Selected groups will be notified by Email by June 22th, 2018. Please do not call to inquire about the status of your application.
