Seeking dancers for a developmental lab for a new play

Pure Dance (a play)

Casting dancers, actors, and actor-dancers for a developmental lab for a new play, PURE DANCE. Rehearses July 29th through August 2nd at Princeton University.

Centered around Serge Lifar, the director and star dancer of the Paris Opera Ballet who collaborated with the Germans during the Occupation, the play follows the life of his ballet 'Icare' (Icarus) from its groundbreaking debut through its gradual transition into an increasingly dark and distinctly fascist aesthetic. The play takes place inside of Lifar's dance studio as the audience is held captive by a peacockish, philosophizing Lifar, the action a composite of the many years of rehearsals over the course of the 1930s that delivered 'Icare' into its final form. The movement of the play is from one morally unambiguous place to another. Between these two poles, there is a crossing, and the experiment of the play is to find it. Where this happens along the way is to a large extent unknowable, but the descent raises the question: What are the moral implications of believing in – and serving – art for art's sake?
