Some investigative questions that we hope you can use a launching point for your work:

What does it mean to own your body?
How do you release fear and trauma?
How do you make healing a priority?
How do you recognize disembodiment?
What do you need to realign your body with your mind?

Essence of Embodiment is curated by Iman Louis-Jeune, one of the curatorial dance fellows at Smush Gallery '20-21 and a dance-filmmaker herself. She actively works to uplift and engage in work that is cathartic rather than escapist.

*Films will be screened online as part of an online programming for the Essence of Embodiment Festival, in addition to a dance intensive, published zines, and a gallery exhibition. Due to COVID-19 we may have a limited in-person screening of accepted films. Due to limited physical space, we may be able to accommodate small/less-involved film installations, but our primary focus is showcasing the film itself.
