Calling dancers and movement artists with a passion for structured dance improvisation!

OPEN DANCE ENSEMBLE is seeking dancers for our forthcoming season. We have one upcoming show scheduled and are planning for additional performance opportunities now that in-person venues are finally opening again. We specialize in self-conducted improvised dance and work closely as a collaborative in both planning and execution. Since we began in 2017, we have created more than a dozen works and performed at Movement Research, GreenSpace Studio, and Jennifer Muller's Studio to name a few venues.The ensemble has always been a volunteer organization, and we pride ourselves on the dedication of our members to the work we create.

“The audition will be in-person: each person must wear a mask for the full duration and take social-distancing precautions.* If interested in auditioning with us, please send your resume, headshot/dance shot, and a video with your performance experience to opendanceensemble@earthlink.net

The Open Dance Ensemble, based in New York City and founded in January 2017, presents live, self-conducted improvised dance performances to share the excitement, joy, and beauty of dance with our audiences. Following in the footsteps of the Judson Church Theater, where improvisation first became a part of modern dance in 1962, and drawing upon Karl Berger's Creative Music Studio conducted music improvs which began in 1974, the Open Dance Ensemble created self-conducted improvisation, a new form of dance choreography in which the dancers not only improvise but also conduct each other as the performance unfolds.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Although we are most interested in the aesthetics of dance, our philosophy and collaborative way of creating and performing may be viewed as a metaphor for social/political organization and as such relevant to many issues of the day.
