Interdisciplinary artist Haley Morgan Miller announces the call for submissions for Receipt Paper Dialogues, an interactive improvisational dance and music performance and installation. The call is open worldwide, please submit by March 1st to be a part of our premiere show at Fabled Narcissism March 19th and 20th at 8pm.

Grab a piece of receipt paper from work, a crumpled one from your pockets and bags, or save your next paper copy. Then draw or write down anything you can imagine! You are invited to participate in the creative process by directing dancers and musicians to follow your original ideas in performance. How does it make you feel to be in control of the narrative? Go to haleymorganmiller.com/receiptpaperdialogues to learn more about how to submit your score.

Receipt Paper Dialogues is an embodiment of community tension under capitalism, distributing the role of worker to the artists and consumer to the audience. When Miller worked in restaurants she would use receipt paper to record choreography and scores. Now she is calling on her community to do the same, whether they relate as service industry workers or as consumers who hang onto receipts in the bottoms of pockets and bags.

Scores will be projected one at a time behind dancers and musicians, with a motion sensor in front of the audience. Audience members are in control of what score comes next, dictating how performers respond. When spectators swipe their hands over the sensor, the projection will change to the next score with the ding of a service bell. The artists will be allowed to exit and enter the space using vintage punch cards to “clock in” and “clock out”. Physical copies of receipt scores will be on display in installation.

Together, artists and audiences alike will partake in a practice of creative liberation combating greed, desire, and duty. We will reflect on the nature of consumer demand under capitalism, exploiting underpaid employees, over-consumption, environmental abuse, and emotional and physical abuse of labor, to push the conversation of a future without these corrupt systems.
