MODArts Dance Collective (MADC) is elated to announce its fifth annual Move to Change Dance Festival on Saturday, November 19, 2022 3:30 PM & 7:30 PM EST at Speyer Hall at University Settlement, 184 Eldridge Street, New York, NY 10002 & Livestream with on demand viewing option. The purpose of Move to Change is to use dance as a form of social justice and arts activism through the lens of BIPOC choreographers and dance filmmakers. The goal of Move to Change is to create cultural and gender affirming spaces for artists of color (African, Latina/o/x, Asian, Arab, Native American [ALAANA]), MENA (Middle East & North Africa), & SWANA (South West Asia & North Africa) to educate, empower, or illuminate issues that reflects their histories and cultures through their unique and rich movement aesthetics. This year, Move to Change will be seeking pieces under one of the following themes:
> Joy embodied in Black & Brown Bodies
> Love interpreted through the lens of BIPOC choreographers/dance filmmakers
Up to sixteen national and international artists will be chosen to present 5-15 minutes of a dance work or dance film in one or both concerts on Saturday, November 19th in one of the following options:
* Live performance in the festival venue (new, work in progress, or previously performed) + tech on the day of the festival
* Pre recorded performance to be livestreamed during the festival
* Completed dance film to be livestreamed during the festival
* New or Work in Progress dance film to be livestreamed during the festival
*****Please note that all artists performing live will be required to show proof of vaccination, complete a health acknowledgement form, and wear face masks in the performance space, except when performing. The audiences will be required to provide the same items to enter the performance space (*Please note we will update you if any changes occur regarding the mask requirements).*****
The 2022 open submission call is Monday, August 29th to Monday, October 3rd at midnight EST. Artists can submit one of the following work samples with their application + $10 application fee:
* A previously performed recorded work that can be performed live during the festival; venue - TBA
* A previously performed recorded work that can be livestreamed during the festival
* A previously completed dance film that can be livestreamed during the festival
* A previously performed recorded work that the selection panel can view if a new piece is being proposed without any movement footage
* A previously completed dance film that the selection panel can view if a new film is being proposed without any recorded footage
* 1-2 minutes of a new proposed work or work in progress in the form of rehearsal footage that is being submitted in the application
* 1-2 minutes of a new proposed or work in progress film in the form of recorded footage that is being submitted in the application
There is a $10 application fee to submit through PayPal or Venmo. If you do not have either account, please contact MADC directly at modartsdancecollective@gmail.com or (929) 352-5253 for alternate forms of payment. There is no participation fee if chosen. All artists will be notified by midnight EST on Monday, October 10, 2022. If chosen, artists will sign a letter of agreement to confirm his/her/their participation in the dance festival. Participating artists will either present their work live or their work will be livestreamed during one or both of the Saturday, November 19th concerts, as well as tech the day of the Saturday concert if performing in person, free photos and performance footage, the opportunity to participate in the festival’s round table discussion, and amplify the artists’ voices through advertising & marketing.
