Seeking Dance Mentors | Turning Tables Inc.

Dancers pictured from A Seat At The Table 2019

Turning Tables is looking for dancers from a variety of dance avenues to serve as mentors to young dancers ages 14-18 who seek a professional dance career and/or guidance for entering into the next stage of their dance careers.

The Turning Tables Mentorship Program will allow young dancers to be paired with a mentor who will meet monthly with their paired dancer and cater to their individual dance needs. Mentors may answer questions about the dance world, guide mentees toward their individual goals, assist them through the college application process, help with resumes and dance reels, and give mentees programs and companies to look into. The program is intended to demystify the broad dance world and give young dancers the knowledge necessary to enter the field.

Mentors will join a cohort of other professional dance mentors who will meet together to strategize program initiatives and discuss the development of the mentorship programs. Mentors who are accepted will be mentors from June 2023 to June 2024.

Learn more about the mentorship program and apply to be a mentor below.

Applications will be open until February 19, 2023

About Turning Tables

The dance art form can be perceived as elitist, eliminating the opportunity for minorities to envision themselves as dancers. Turning Tables was created with a goal to bridge the gap between minorities and dance. By fostering opportunity to underrepresented youth and by exposing dance as a viable career option, Turning Tables strives to give minorities visibility to dance so that they can feel as though they are equally capable to participate and succeed as their more advantaged counterparts. Turning Tables is about changing the perspective on how society views dance as an art form.

Commencing with a successful dance performance fundraiser in the spring of 2018, Turning Tables Project consisted of thought-provoking pieces that brought attention to the underrepresentation of minorities in Ballet, the unfair standard that minorities have to overcome, and the implicit bias that society puts toward minorities. Turning Tables has the mission of providing outreach dance programs to underrepresented communities and to provide underrepresented youth with the opportunity to participate in order to make dance more accessible to everyone.
