Bates Dance Festival seeks 4 Mentors and 1 Director of Mentorship for our 2024 Young Dancers Intensive.

YOUNG DANCERS INTENSIVE MENTORS

4 positions available
2 positions June 26 – July 13, 2024, fee $2500
2 positions June 26 – July 20, 2024, fee $3500

These are residential positions on the Bates College campus. Single dorm room accommodations and meals are provided as well as travel stipend.

A Young Dancers Intensive (YDI) Mentor position is a rewarding opportunity to work with BDF’s cohort of Young Dancers, a group of 50-70 teens from around the country.  The Mentors, a group of working dance professionals, serve as both camp counselors and artistic mentors while providing general support to the students, staff, and faculty of the Festival.  The Mentors embody the values of the festival, balancing rigorous artistic practice with non-competitive and supportive inclusivity. The Mentors work as a team 24/7 to provide the students with tools for self-care, building community, and how to thrive in continued studies and an eventual career in dance.

Responsibilities include coordinating and supervising a group of 10-15 students; communicating regularly with Faculty and  Mentorship Director; daily check-ins with students; leading nightly hall meetings with students; attending nightly meetings with Mentorship  Director; taking approximately 2 classes each day with students; provide artistic mentorship and feedback for student choreographers; odd jobs as delegated by Mentorship  Director.

Applicants will have 2+ years working with teens (teaching, supervising, and/or mentoring); 3+ years of dance training in higher education (College, University, Professional Training or equivalent); ability to adapt to a changing environment and handle multiple priorities, work effectively in large and small groups; be at least 21 years of age by June 25, 2024. 

YDI Mentors are temporary employees of Bates College and hiring is contingent upon a background check.

THE DIRECTOR OF MENTORSHIP

June 26 – July 13, 2024, fee $3250

This is a residential position on the Bates College campus. Single dorm room accommodations and meals are provided as well as travel stipend. 

The Director of Mentorship (DM) exists as a hub of communication between the office, faculty, mentors, and students and also mentors a group of YDI students. The DM manages all mentor activity and must be informed about all issues involving student residence life, behavioral issues, and injuries every night at the mentor meeting, and/or during the day if it is a more serious case. The DM will coordinate daily activities, meeting agendas, and schedules for mentors and students. In addition, they ensure mentor accountability and may need to step in to reinforce the community ground rules. Generally, they are available to speak directly with parents who may have specific concerns about their student.

Applicants will have 5+ years working with teens (teaching, supervising, and/or mentoring); 3+ years of dance training in higher education (College, University, Professional Training or equivalent); ability to adapt to a changing environment and handle multiple priorities, excellent communication and administrative skills; have a drivers license. 

The Director of Mentorship is a temporary employee of Bates College and hiring is contingent upon a background check.
