Choreography for the Camera Workshop

FEBRUARY 5 - 26

Mondays  7:00-9:00 PM (EST)  4 sessions

Faculty: Anabella Lenzu,
Artistic director Anabella Lenzu/DanceDrama, choreographer & filmmaker

This course introduces participants to the field of dance on film and screendance by retracing its influences, as well as experimenting with compositional elements and creating video work. We will start by studying the historical fundamentals and approaches of screendance (dance for the camera), video art and performance art captured on video and film. We will explore how the different styles of performances from dance, theater, performance art, and even visual arts are composed and captured on film and video. Through lectures, discussions and exercises, we will look at the role of performance in filmmaking, embracing both risks and limitations.

The following questions will be explored:

What is choreography? How do we read movements on screen?

What are the values of performance during and after the pandemic?

We will consider choreography as a frame, as an apparatus of capture.

This course is geared toward filmmakers, directors, visual artists, performers, choreographers and dancers interested in dance/film collaborations.

NOTE: This course is fully online and offered through synchronous sessions during the listed course hours.
