Re: Constructing dance leadership: A phenomenological study of leadership in the dance industry.

Dear Dance Professional,

Are you, or do you know of, an artistic director, choreographer, assistant director/choreographer, dance teacher, dance captain, or dance supervisor/master/rehearsal director?

If so, this original study is seeking your expertise.

To participate in this study, you will be a leader who is over the age of 18 and has worked in a leadership role in the professional dance industry for at least five years. Your responsibilities will include making or maintaining dance, teaching dance, and administrating dance. Administrative responsibilities may take the shape of formal leadership/teaching roles with an administrative component or by being a self-employed professional who is responsible for managing their career.

Participation includes a 90-minute Zoom interview about your experiences of leadership in the dance industry. You will also be asked if you would be open to being observed in practice and that can be negotiated with you to make any observations as convenient and unobtrusive as possible. Observations will not be audio/video recorded.

For this study, you must consent to at least have your audio recorded for data collection. However, you may choose to turn your video camera off.

Your participation in this study may help address the continuing need for data on how to develop current and emerging leaders in dance.

If you are interested in participating in this study or nominating a recognized leader, please fill out the interest form at the following link:

If you would like additional information about this study or recruitment, please contact Chris Houston at ch3611@tc.clumbia.edu.

Thank you for your consideration, and once again, please do not hesitate to contact me if you are interested in learning more about this Institutional Review Board-approved project protocol number 24-224.
