Visitor Services Associate: The Arts Center at Governors Island

June 2024 – October 2024

Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) seeks Visitor Services Associates (VSAs) for The Arts Center at Governors Island (ACGI), a multidisciplinary arts space developed, programmed and operated by LMCC. The Visitor Services Associates are the first point of contact for our audiences and provide a crucial role in ensuring visitors have a well informed and positive experience at The Arts Center. VSA will staff the gallery, provide information to visitors about the exhibitions, The Arts Center, LMCC, and assist with public programming. VSA’s will also lead short bi-monthly exhibition tours for the public. The VSA will work across various programs and initiatives within the Artist Programs department at LMCC and will report directly to the Exhibitions and Public Programs Manager and Audience Services Manager for the River To River Festival.

Ideal candidates for the role will have a passion for connecting and engaging with the public through various modes of creative practice such as: performance, dance, curating, painting and sculpture. Education, teaching, sales or gallery experience is a plus. Long periods of standing may be necessary. 

VSAs will have the opportunity to participate in enrichment and professional development opportunities, such as talks with curators and artists, peer-to-peer knowledge sharing opportunities, and discussions, etc.

This is a part-time, temporary position. Candidates must have flexible availability during the Summer of 2024 and able to work on the following days: 

Between June 7 - 23 2024, for the River To River festival, and on Saturdays and/or Sundays from July - October 2024

The opportunity for additional hours to accommodate LMCC’s other programming and special events may also be available. 

Responsibilities:

- Welcome guests and ensure a safe, pleasant, inclusive, and informative experience.

- Serve as point person for information about the Exhibitions, The Arts Center, LMCC’s full calendar of programming, as well as safety protocols within The Arts Center.

- Replenish exhibition printed materials as necessary.

- Assist visitors with digital ticket reservations on-site and check reservations at the entrance to the gallery space.

- Track visitor count and maintain safe social distancing capacity in the space.

- Ensure visitors understand and comply with the COVID-19 safety protocol and social distancing guidelines.

- Assist with set-up, break-down, and facilitation of public programs.

- Maintain general upkeep of the space, including minor cleaning and trash removal.

Qualifications: Strong candidates for this position will have:

A personable demeanor, comfortable with speaking to the public. 

A passion for connecting and engaging with visitors and the general public

An ability to problem solve and think on their feet.

Arts education, Museum education, gallery, teaching, customer service or sales experience a plus, but not required.

Compensation: Visitor Service Associates are independent contractors and will receive a combination of compensation methods: a stipend for work completed from June 7 - 23, 2024 of $1,200 and an hourly rate of $20/hour for shifts worked July - October 2024.
