JOB SUMMARY:

 

Adelphi University's Department of Dance seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor faculty appointment in Dance. The ideal candidate will be committed to collaborating with current faculty in cultivating a forward-thinking curriculum for diverse, multifaceted dance artists for the 21st century. Candidates must be able to engage in inclusive teaching strategies for contemporary dance artists. Faculty typically teach nine credits per semester in a two-semester academic year. This position begins August 2025 and incorporates student instruction and the possibility of choreographing or staging works for departmental productions as part of the teaching load.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

• The candidate will teach Department of Dance courses that include dance technique and/or additional courses in the candidate's area of expertise (e.g. dance forms such as hip-hop/street styles, Afro-Caribbean, Indian classical dance, Native American, capoeira, Gaga, Flying-Low, and others).

• Other additional courses could include dance and technology, anatomy for dancers, dance pedagogy, partnering, dance conditioning, contact improvisation, and dance improvisation.

• Additionally, they may choreograph at least one artistic work per semester for the departmental productions.

• Hired faculty will also assist with recruitment and curriculum revision.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Requirements

 

• The position requires a terminal degree of MFA or MA plus equivalent professional experience.

• At least three years of demonstrated teaching proficiency (full-time preferred).

• Demonstrated professional-level experience in the creative/performance field.

• Demonstrated commitment to practices of Antiracism, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging through scholarly and creative activity, pedagogical practice, civic or community engagement, and/or a position statement will be given preference.

• Applicants should show evidence of the ability to teach all levels of a relevant movement practice; evidence of ability to teach dance studies and/or critical theory in dance; and evidence of a commitment to culturally relevant, diverse, and inclusive teaching practices.

Preferred but not required

 

• Demonstrated record of success in choreography, including the development of new work.

• Demonstrated record of success in teaching multiple levels of dance training.

• Professional experience that connects our students to the industry, professional dance companies, and grad school programs.

• Experience teaching in higher education

SALARY INFORMATION:

 

In compliance with New York's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $77,000 - $79,000. Adelphi University considers factors such as departmental budgets, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. An annual base salary higher than the range may be warranted in circumstances where a candidate has demonstrable equivalent prior higher education experience at another University.

THE ADELPHI UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF DANCE:

 

Founded in 1938, Adelphi is among the first American colleges to have a dance program. We are a technique-based, concert-dance focused BFA program. While not a conservatory, we train like one with our focus on two daily technique classes. Adelphi offers an attractive suburban campus with a 45-minute train ride into NYC. There are currently about 40 majors and minors in the Department. Students perform in two different productions per semester, one of which is choreographed by faculty and a guest, and the other is a student-driven concert showcasing student creative works.
