Audition Announcement - Tabula Rasa Dance Theater

xx Steven Pisano

Tabula Rasa Dance Theater is seeking artists of all genders and backgrounds for our upcoming Spring Season Performances at El Museo del Barrio Theater on June 19th, 20th, 21st, and 22nd, 2025.

Our Season will feature two pieces by choreographer and Artistic Director Felipe Escalante:

1) a restaging of 2023's "Border of Lights," a powerful critique of the xenophobic narratives surrounding immigration; and,

2) "Escaramuza," a vibrant celebration of the all-female sport that showcases the cultural heritage within immigrant communities.

Together, these works aim to elevate and honor Mexican culture and the experiences of all who navigate the complexities of identity and belonging.

To be considered for a position, please email tabularasadt@gmail.com with your resume and a dance reel. We encourage artists from all backgrounds to apply, and especially artists who identify as immigrants or first-generation Americans.

We will invite selected artists to attend a company rehearsal in Manhattan. Please also indicate in your email which of the following dates/times you would be available to join:

Wednesday 3/19: 12pm - 2pm
Thursday 3/20: 12pm - 2pm
Friday 3/21: 12pm - 2pm

The project rehearsal period will consist of daily Monday to Friday rehearsals, 2 to 3 hours a day, between 12pm and 4pm, until the June performances. Some rehearsals will include a full company class beforehand. There is some flexibility with rehearsal availability, but interested artists must be able to commit to the majority of rehearsals.

Compensation for dancers will begin at $800 for the project period, commensurate with experience. Apprentice positions are also available!

Tabula Rasa Dance Theater, led by Artistic Director and Choreographer Felipe Escalante, includes a diverse group of dancers, many of whom identify as immigrants. The company is concerned with the pressing social justice issues of our times, and with the historical precedents for them. We would like our community to connect with our work as an opportunity to pause and reflect on the world they live in. We strive to motivate our audience to examine their values, with the aim of creating a better environment for future generations.
