92NY Harkness Dance Center and Works & Process present Uptown Rhythm Dance Festival

92NY Harkness Dance Center and Works & Process present Uptown Rhythm Dance Festival

The 92nd Street Y, New York and Works & Process announces the first annual Uptown Rhythm Dance Festival, a multi-night performance and workshop program, presented in collaboration between uptown neighbors 92NY’s Harkness Dance Center and Works & Process at Guggenheim New York, El Barrio’s Artspace PS 109, and Museum of the City of New York. Through performances and workshops with established talent and rising stars, the festival illuminates the connections and individuality of rhythm-based dance forms including tap, hip hop and street dance, Kathak Indian dance, flamenco, Appalachian flatfooting, Irish step dance, live music and more. 92NY performances – curated by Harkness Dance Center Co-Executive Director Alison Manning and award-winning choreographer/performer Caleb Teicher – include several world premieres and feature talkbacks with Teicher following each performance.

“I am excited to launch the first annual Uptown Rhythm Dance Festival with our neighbors Works & Process and this year’s 92NY festival co-curator, Caleb Teicher,” comments Alison Manning. “As a born and raised tap dancer and lover of all forms of rhythmic dance, my goal in creating this festival is to offer more space, greater acknowledgement, and a larger platform for established voices and the next generation of rising stars in each of these dance forms. The tap and rhythm dance community has seen a shrinking of rehearsal spaces, performance opportunities and festivals over recent years. It is our mission to counteract this trend by uplifting, making space, and shining a light on the history, lineage and bright future of rhythmic dance forms.”

“It is what we do together that makes a difference and we are thrilled to be collaborating with El Barrio’s Artspace PS109 and the Museum of the City of New York to grow the number of workshops offered, and open the Guggenheim Rotunda to a swing dance party so that we can go beyond spectating to also participating and embodying the dance,” said Duke Dang, Executive Director of Works & Process. “It is auspicious that the Museum of the City of New York is opening the exhibition Urban Stomp: Dreams & Defiance on the Dance Floor a first-of-its-kind exhibition that will allow us to explore over 200 years of social dance history in New York City.”
