Chavasse Dance & Performance Presents
Amy Chavasse and Guests
In a return to New York City, choreographer Amy Chavasse presents a new evening of dance work exclusive to Triskelion Arts’ new Greenpoint, Brooklyn facility. The evening will include a remount of her 2011 group work Hunger for the Longing (a biased history of seduction), an exploration of overt patriotism and misled nationalism through Woody Guthrie’s iconic song “This Land Is Your Land.” The evening will also include a new duet for Chavasse and actor Malcolm Tulip, deux dogtooth, an improvisational work originally developed with longtime collaborator Peter Schmitz. Rounding out the performance will be the premiere of Conspiracy Going (Amy needs a lot of empathy), a new solo based on Chavasse’s serendipitous encounter with a conspiracy blogger who wrote on her work in 2008. NYC-based dancers Aidan Feldman, Sarah Konner, Jessica Jolly, and Donnell Oakley will also join Chavasse in this unique set of performances.
As artistic director of ChavasseDance&Performance, Chavasse's work has been presented throughout the U.S. including New York City (Dance New Amsterdam, Dixon Place, 100 Grand, Judson Church, WaxWorks, Triskelion, BAAD Ass! Women’s Festival); Washington, D.C. (The Dance Place); San Diego; Seattle (Broadway Performance Hall); Vermont (The Flynn Theater); Tempe, AZ (Galvin Theater); and with the NC Dance Festival and Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out. Internationally, she has taught and had her work produced in Trinidad; Cienfuegos and Havana, Cuba; Kaunus and Vilnius, Lithuania; Vienna, Austria; Cali, Colombia; Buenos Aires, and The Beijing Dance Festival. She is dedicated to establishing international connections for her own creative projects and for her students, and since arriving at the University of Michigan in 2006. She successfully funded residencies to bring Grupo Krapp – (Buenos Aires), and ResExtensa Danza Teatro Danza – (Bari, Italy), and Hou Ying (Beijing) and Zhang Peng (Shanghai) to U-M. ChavasseDance&Performance traveled to Bari, Italy in July 2011 to teach, rehearse and premiere Hunger for the Longing (a biased history of seduction) at Teatro Traeta in Bitonto.
