Anna Sokolow Theatre / Dance Ensemble

Anna Sokolow Theatre / Dance Ensemble Anna Sokolow Theatre / Dance Ensemble

The National Arts Club presents a conversation with Samantha Geracht, Artistic Director of Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble. Geracht discusses Sokolow’s influence on dance and show videos of some of her ground-breaking work.

Anna Sokolow (1910-2000) was one of the most dynamic and uncompromising of choreographers, combining dance, music, theater, and poetry. She began her career as a dancer with Martha Graham. She studied choreography with Louis Horst and quickly became his assistant and most outstanding composition student.

Sokolow influenced major artists such as Alvin Ailey, Pina Bausch, and Martha Clark. She also made important contributions to the theater, most notably Candide and the off-Broadway production of Hair.
