CLASS DESCRIPTION:
This class is an introduction to Bharatanatyam, a classical Indian dance form that originated over 4,000 years ago. It will demonstrate the basic steps and building blocks, or 'adavus', of Bharatanatyam, leading up to more complex dance sequences, or 'jathis'. It will also cover the emotional aspect of the dance, including the nine primary emotions ('navarasas') and how these are incorporated with jathis. Two short, complete pieces from a Bharatanatyam repertoire will also be demonstrated.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Aditi Sundaram is a life-long student of the classical Indian dance form Bharatanatyam, studying with teachers in both India and the United States. Aditi has given several performances, both solo and ensemble, in cities across these two countries, including New York, Boston, Aspen, Chennai, and Bangalore.
