Danced Stories from Indian & Greek Myth

Danced Stories from Indian & Greek Myth
Internationally acclaimed Indian dancer, Rajika Puri not only sings and chants texts in Sanskrit and articulates rhythmic syllables as she dances, but she also weaves a narrative in English. At times she's storyteller, at others a character in her story. The show presents two new works on Lord Vishnu: as Man-lion & as Rama, hero of the epic Ramayana, followed by an overview of how the form developed through a collage of signature works: Sati, Radha, Savitri. It ends with a section from her new work, ELEN of SPARTA, in which she tells Homer's ILIAD in brief. She is accompanied by MARK KATSAOUNIS (percussion) & TANIYA PANDA (vocal). Trained in two forms of Indian dance, Rajika has performed in solo recital through Europe, Latin America & India. Since 1986, when she played 'Narrator & goddess Kali' in The Transposed Heads directed by Julie Taymor (Lincoln Center Theater), she has featured as Narrator in many theatrical productions; she also gives lectures on Indian dance, art, & music.
