Floor Friends: Floorwork Training

Floor Friends: Floorwork Training

Floor Friends: Floorwork Training

Thursdays, 10am – 12noon // 20-Oct thru 8-Dec

$14

This floorwork training class expands our relationship to the floor to include all surfaces of the room and our bodies. How can we relate to, go through, and leap from the floor, the ceiling, the walls? What if our physical investigations could shift our physical environment?

Class invites students and peers into my practice. Inspired by circus training, qi-gong and Flying Low and Passing Through (David Zambrano), I’ll share explorations for moving through space dynamically, energetically and creatively with other humans. I believe deeply in the importance of training, so expect a skill-based class that gives you the foundation to fly! My class brings home floorwork approaches that I’ve gathered from around the world including Mexico, Ecuador, Austria, Belgium, Spain and across the United States.

Sarah Chien is a dancer, improviser and world traveler. She currently performs with Andre Zachery/Renegade Performance Group and collaborates with a variety of independent projects. Among her influential experiences she counts dance-activism with Sydnie L. Mosley Dances, performing around the world with Jody Sperling/Time Lapse Dance, living in Ecuador, studying at Barnard College and training at Festival Deltebre Dansa.

In 2013 she founded Floor Friends, an organization through which she produces classes, workshops and performances that investigate multi-dimensional, highly physical floorwork and related group improvisational forms. She is also building solo repertoire both on the ground and in the air, exploring gravity and full-body awareness through circus and floorwork. She’ll be returning to NYC after spending September studying intensively with David Zambrano, founder of Flying Low and Passing Through, in Spain.
