Lxl Residency: María Paula Morera presents Swing de Amor

María in a rehearsal at the Brooklyn Peace Center Simeon Beardsley

A dance performance developed by María Paula Morera Núñez. This piece is an exploration of Swing Criollo, a Costa Rican dance style that emerged in the 1950s in the dance salons of the capital. Known for its brincadito (jumping step) to cumbia music, Swing Criollo was influenced by the big North American swing bands of the time.

Swing de Amor is a love letter to childhood, a place, and a sense of belonging. Through this performance, María taps into their movement memory to bring Swing Criollo into the present—on their own terms.
