Erin Gottwald presents The Out-of-Towners Performance Series

At the Mark O’Donnell Theater at the Actors Fund Arts Center in Brooklyn, NY

October 26-27, 2018

The Out-of-Towners Performance Series celebrates the convening of artists from across the country and beyond to the stage in NYC. Dance/theatre performance groups share their work for three performances only.

Ellen Bartel (Austin, TX)

Erika Batdorf and Kate Digby (Manhattan, Kansas and Toronto, Canada respectively)

Michael Foley and Clarence Brooks (Boca Raton and St.Petersburg, Florida/Paris, France)

Grayscale/Jessica Kondrath (Los Angeles, California)

Nina Haft and Company  (Oakland, California)

Stephanie Liapis (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)

Prometheus Dance (Boston, Massachusetts)

Toronto playwright/performer ERIKA BATDORF creates a portrait of her mother, a painter who did controversial performance art in the 1960’s and the creature that lives in her studio. KATE DIGBY (Kansas) directs this theatrical two-hander that includes biosensors and explores the meeting point of madness and creativity.

ELLEN BARTEL is based in Austin, TX: she presents butoh-inspired dark humor performance about middle-aged angst, disappointment and ambitions unfulfilled.

MICHAEL FOLEY and CLARENCE BROOKS
Flor premiered as a solo in 1999 at the Bates Dance Festival and has been in the repertory of three dance companies. These performances mark the premiere of Flor in its duet incarnation. The haunting male voices from the a cappella group, Chanticleer, combined with John Corigliano’s melancholic violin pieces for The Red Violin provide the musical underscore for a duet that investigates the manifestations of grief. An impossibly large bouquet of flowers further enhances the visual effect as the dancers scatter, crush and eventually devour the precious petals.  The subtle power of Flor, however, lies in the dramatic and physical catharsis the duet undergoes throughout the piece, culminating in a final act of sublime beauty.

GRAYSCALE is a contemporary ballet/modern dance company based in Los Angeles, CA.  Under artistic director JESSICA KONDRATH, GRAYSCALE is known for its kinetic virtuosity and fluid lyricism.

NINA HAFT & COMPANY is an Oakland/San Francisco based contemporary dance ensemble. “Shaping space with a sculptor’s savvy,” Haft’s articulate and stirring works reveal invisible forces and dynamic patterns in the natural world. Wind in the Bones is an excerpt from Precarious Pod, an immersive performance about animal instinct, climate change and extinction.

STEPHANIE LIAPIS
The Building of a Sphere is a solo work that explores silence. I use visual and sonic textures to create abstract, nonlinear narratives. My dances spin issues of relationship, gender, isolation and marginalization into new patterns so that we can see them with new clarity. I am specifically interested in using physicality to develop the logic of each new dance world, using unfamiliar arm and hand gestures or specific patterns of feet like moving hieroglyphics that reveal the practices of the creatures within it.

PROMETHEUS DANCE co-directed by Diane Arvanites and Tommy Neblett presents award winning work with an eye on human condition. Project I.I.I. contains the essence of crowd psychology, attachment, the exchange of power, elements of surprise, curiosity, bravery, and addiction. Based near Boston the company celebrates 30 years of performance and programming throughout the year.
