The Split Bill program is designed to support emerging dance artists looking for a stepping-stone between the showcase format and full, evening-length self-production. At least two of the participating artists or companies will be selected to share a run as part of the Triskelion Arts Presents program during the 2015-2016 Season. November’s series features seymour//dancecollective, Julia Jurgilewicz for RedCurrant Collective, Barkin/Selissen Project, and The People Movers.

About the Artists

seymour//dancecollective premieres Median, a work about race in a “post-racial” society. Using Al Young’s poem A Dance for Militant Dilettantes and Ralph Ellison’s novel Invisible Man as an entry point, the piece takes a raw approach to format, where text, music, and movement are all on equal footings of expression and precedent. The collective lays bare the central ideas and challenges for the audience to draw their own conclusions from our explorations/expositions.

Chafin Seymour took his first African dance class at age 4 in Brooklyn. From that time forward, his training and experience in dance have been investigative and eclectic. He received his BFA with Distinction from The Ohio State University Department of Dance in 2012. As a choreographer, Chafin strives to make work that encompasses disparate influences with the intention of crossing boundaries culturally and aesthetically. To this end, he founded seymour//dancecollective in 2011. This group works collaboratively in an intensive process meant to encourage creative rapport and idea exchange. The group works on a project-to-project basis with a rotating roster of curated artists.

Julia Jurgilewicz, in partnership with RedCurrant Collective, premieres her first full-length work, Dust, a mythical quintet for five women. The piece explores the convergence of her two passions: dance and fantasy fiction novels by using movement, in the format of a novel, to tell a story. Armed with sophisticated technical vocabulary, character commitment through gesture, a flair for understatement, and strong group dynamics, it aims to ignite an audience’s imagination.

Julia Jurgilewicz is a New England native who has been choreographing and performing in New York, nationally, and abroad for six years. She graduated from Tisch School of the Arts, NYU, where she met her fellow members of RedCurrant Collective, a group of artist who support each other to create and show work. Julia has had the pleasure of performing in two seasons at the Metropolitan Opera in Aida, Don Giovanni, and Parsifal. She has performed with the companies Mark Dendy, LEVYdance, Bodystories: Teresa Fellion Dance, The Anata Project, Johannes Weiland, and Jillian Pena. Currently, Julia dances for Erica Essner Performance Co-op and Suzanne Beahrs Dance, and is the administrative consultant for the Charles Weidman Dance Foundation. 

The People Movers premiere And He Saw That It Was Good, with music composed by Sontag Shogun. The piece takes its inspiration from Jose Saramago’s novel Cain, as well as excerpts from the bible and modern-day stories about faith. It examines the idea that tests of faith are the supreme indicator of one’s character and the basis upon which one is judged and then punished or rewarded.

The People Movers is a contemporary dance company that creates and performs original works by creative director Kate Ladenheim (14-15 Leimay Fellow at CAVE). The People Movers' work reveals the abstract and inherently performative qualities of the world through complex and highly athletic physical expressions. There is a constant search for the relevance in dance as an art form. Ladenheim founded The People Movers in January 2012 as a platform to explore her choreographic goals and ideas. Her group has been selected to show work at the Boston Contemporary Dance Festival, the DUMBO Dance Festival, the CURRENT SESSIONS, NYC10 Dance, Dixon Place, Symphony Space, and Triskelion Arts. The company has enjoyed residencies through The Field’s Subsidized Block Rehearsal Space Rental Program, White Wave Dance, and with The Ballet and Dance Center in Syracuse, New York. The People Movers were also commissioned by the Juventas New Music Ensemble to create HackPolitik, a new contemporary ballet based on the Hacktivist collective Anonymous. BARKIN/SELISSEN PROJECT presents Skyfire, a collaborative event inspired by impressions of Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, featuring choreography by Kyla Barkin and Aaron Selissen. Crafted to travel through a surreal rendering of space and time, this abstraction draws upon universal ideas and images surrounding love, betrayal, labor, and the pure joy of existence, set to an original score by James Guastaferro and Zac Selissen.

BARKIN/SELISSEN PROJECT, a NYC-based contemporary dance company, presents the choreography of Artistic Directors Kyla Barkin and Aaron Selissen through live performance and workshops. Collaborators include Jim Simons (mathematician), Sirius String Quartet, Ray Anderson and Band, Falkor Systems (autonomous pet drone), Sally Taylor, Reggie Watts, James Guastaferro (composer), Lindsey Boise (projection), and more. B/S P has been presented across the U.S and abroad including Jacob's Pillow, SUNY Stony Brook's Staller Center, Dixon Place, The Flea, Tempe Center for the Arts, UferStudios in Berlin, Germany, Yogyajakarta, Indonesia via 3D Hologram, the Edinburgh International Conference Center in Scotland as part of the Booking Dance Festival, and Grange Hall on Martha’s Vineyard for the inaugural ConSenses festival. Barkin received her BA from UCLA and has worked with Doug Elkins, Isabel Gotzkowsky, and Carolyn Dorfman among others. Selissen received his BFA from Butler University and is a member of the Limón Dance Company.
