La MaMa Mourns Loss of Founder, Ellen Stewart

From Nicky Paraiso, Director of Programming, The Club at La Mama and Festival Curator, La MaMa Moves! Dance Festival:

To all of our dear friends and colleagues, our Mama, the great Ellen Stewart passed away this morning. Her presence in our lives has meant so much to me and so many others throughout the world. I salute her spirit as La MaMa enjoys a resurgence in which all of our theaters are overflowing with artists and audience, which is just what Ellen would have wanted to see.

A dancer in a black tutu and leotard and pointe shoes stands on one leg, with the other leg extended behind the body in a straight line. One arm is raised above the head and the other extended to the back parallel to the extended leg. The school director is opposite the dancer and wears a red DTH logo t-shirt and black pants and ballet slippers. She holds the hand of the arm raised above the dancer’s head with one arm and her back arm is extended and she is smiling at the student.
