Honoring the Path

Last night, I just attended Visible, a world premiere at Harlem Stage choreographed by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar and Nora Chipaumire. I highly recommend it. What I appreciated most about the work was that it honored history -- black American history and American history at large. It honored how we all came to be here - no matter what our background. The work told a deeply meaningful story: In order to cross or even make it to the threshold of where you are going you have to bare it all and even then, those who you depended on, those who supported you, helped you get there, might not make it with you.

So with that in mind, today I share a video of dance that honors history and honors the path that allowed us to arrive where we are. "In Gratitude" danced by Ronald K. Brown for Katherine Dunham. Enjoy!

A dancer in a black tutu and leotard and pointe shoes stands on one leg, with the other leg extended behind the body in a straight line. One arm is raised above the head and the other extended to the back parallel to the extended leg. The school director is opposite the dancer and wears a red DTH logo t-shirt and black pants and ballet slippers. She holds the hand of the arm raised above the dancer’s head with one arm and her back arm is extended and she is smiling at the student.
