Envisioned and designed collaboratively by Miguel Gutierrez and Gibney Dance, LANDING is an experiment in transition, pedagogy, research, mentorship, and possibility.

Over the course of six months, a selected group of dance artists will meet with each other, Gutierrez, and a variety of extraordinary guest performing artists and administrators in the context of workshops, artist talks, studio visits, studio time, performances, and public presentation. Using the vast web of unique resources available through Gibney Dance Center, the goal is to create a network of experiences to address and support the interests and challenges that face dance artists either newly arrived to New York or those who feel the need for better navigation through the current dance and performance landscape.

The various emphases of LANDING are creating community; valuing experimentation in the creative process; making a space for critical inquiry; listening to how other people in the dance and performance community are making it work; generating practical and administrative skills in order to survive financially; and activating a conversation about the cultural, social, and political value of dance and performance work in today’s world.

Guest Artists for the 2016-17 Pilot Program include:
luciana achugar
Justin Vivian Bond
Michelle Boulé
Camille Brown
Ralph Lemon
Juliana May
Ben Pryor
Colin Self

LANDING will be structured as a series of intensive monthly meetings over the 2016 – 2017 season.

In general the schedule will be as follows: Fridays 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm, Saturdays and Sundays 10:00 am – 6:00 pm over the following dates. The schedule is open to slight change in terms of working hours, but not dates.

September 30 – October 2
November 4 – 6
December 2 – 4
January 13 – 15
February 24 – 26
March 24 – 26

Cost: $500, to be paid in full or in installments. Limited scholarships available.

Who is eligible?

LANDING is geared towards the dance artist within their first few years (3 to 5) of arrival to New York City, or to the dance artist who feels that they could benefit from a community education model at this point in their practice.

The term “dance artist” is defined loosely and includes artists whose interests extend across a variety of media. For the purposes of LANDING, the traditional distinctions between “dancer” and “choreographer” are not relevant. All participants will be considered generative artists.

Emphasis will be made in the selection process to creating a community of participants diverse in gender, race, sexual orientation, age, economic status and ability.

The application is available online now. All applicants are asked to submit:

Artist Bio (250 words) or one page Artist CV
A one page letter of intent (500 words) stating why you are interested in participating in LANDING.
Brief statement of financial need. If your participation in LANDING would be impossible due to the fee, please let us know.
A link to a sample of your work: a performance you’ve created, you performing in someone else’s work, or whatever you deem to be the best example of your work.

All applications are due by July 31, 2016 at midnight. Participants will be notified by August 15.
