Administered by Dance/NYC in 2019 in partnership with Gibney and Spaceworks, the Disability. Dance. Artistry. Residency Program was made possible by the generous support of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs CreateNYC Disability Forward Fund and the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation. The purpose of the residency program is to expand opportunities for dancers with disabilities, and to advance accessibility and inclusion within the larger dance, residency and presenting communities. The residency program allows Dance/NYC to award week-long residencies to disabled dance artists or integrated dance companies at Gibney and Spaceworks. Dance/NYC believes the dance ecology must itself be just, equitable, and inclusive to meaningfully contribute to social progress and envisions a dance ecology wherein power, funding, opportunities, conduct, and impacts are fair for all artists, cultural workers, and audiences. Dance/NYC's approach cuts across its public programs and all aspects of its operations.
In February 2020, Dance/NYC announced a second iteration of the Disability. Dance. Artistry. Residency Program scheduled to occur in May and June 2020, made possible with the generous support of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs CreateNYC Disability Forward Fund and the Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation. However, in light of the Coronavirus pandemic and the social restriction measures implemented to contain the spread of the virus, the program was converted to the Disability. Dance. Artistry. Dance and Social Justice Fellowship Program which recognized the critical role that disabled dance workers and practitioners play in social justice movements and to ensure that these workers were supported while continuing to place disability front and center as a positive artistic and generative force.
In August 2019, Dance/NYC announced the following recipients of funding:
Grantees were awarded an honorarium of $5,000, an additional stipend of $1,000 for personal care assistant(s) if needed, up to 60 hours of rehearsal time at Gibney, a ten-class card at Gibney, administrative space, and marketing and convening support. These three grantees were selected by panel review and were among a competitive pool of self-identified disabled dance makers that submitted applications in response to an open call. Key evaluation criteria included artistic excellence; central roles for dance artists living with SCI; a commitment to justice, equity, and inclusion; and diversity of participant types and perspectives.

Grantees were awarded an honorarium of $5,000, an additional stipend of $1,000 for personal care assistant(s) if needed, up to 60 hours of rehearsal time at one of the partnering dance centers, a ten-class card at Gibney, administrative space, and marketing and convening support.
