About: Dance/NYC is pleased to partner with Purelements: An Evolution in Dance for a conversation at the intersectionality of dance, immigration, equity and local community building. Moderated by Dance/NYC’s Programs Manager Alejandra Duque Cifuentes, panelists iele Paloumpis, Elana Anderson Phd, Kwikstep and Rokafella will grapple with the impact of immigration on dance and cultural practices and the cultural and racial legacy of East New York and other underrepresented areas.

How do immigrant groups and first-generation Americans work to assimilate, preserve, or transcribe dance and cultural practices for future generations? How does equity play a role in the creation of spaces that help to preserve and support the sharing and development of dance as a cultural practice?

The conversation will feature a spoken word performance by Jaime “Lee” Lewis and serve as the backdrop for “Roots of my Legacy,” an evening of selected works presented by the Purelements Junior Company, with spoken word artist Jaime Lee Lewis and Jennifer Falu, providing a lyrical current that stretches throughout the evening’s works.
