Upstart Festival Auditions

Now in its third year, this festival celebrates the budding talent of artists new to presenting their own choreographic work in NYC. Curated by
Cora Dance Artistic Director, Shannon Hummel, and BAX Founding and Executive Director, Marya Warshaw, Upstart performances feature 12-14 dance artists over two to three evenings, all of whom have been
choreographing less than three full years in the city. Artists are chosen through live audition and must demonstrate the seed of a distinctive
artistic vision combined with the desire to connect deeply with that vision as a career path in the future.

In addition to performances, festival participants take part in an open roundtable event facilitated by Hummel aiming to help participants build relationships and connections between one another and the broader dance community.

BAX provides a modest stipend for each choreographer and participants receive discounted rehearsal space at The Cora Studio in Red Hook, Brooklyn leading up to the performance events.
