POSITION: Dancewave Company Coach

REPORTS TO:Executive/Artistic Director (ED)


SALARY:
$16/hour

HOURS: Part-Time Position
Wednesdays 5-7:30 pm (required-company rehearsal)
Saturdays 1-5:30 pm (required-company rehearsal)

Dancewave Company production weeks:
Spring Celebration:Thursday, May 31, 2012 and Friday-Saturday June 1-2, 2012 (required); Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival: August 7 - 11, 2012

Additional administrative hours: 2-6 hours per/week (flexible schedule)

DATES: May 31 – June 2, 2012 and August 7 – 11, 2012.

ABOUT THE DANCEWAVE COMPANY: Dancewave Company is a dance troupe of teenagers, ages 15 -18, selected by audition from all over New York City. This exceptional company provides a professional environment for young people that both challenges and encourages them to excel. The company works with internationally renowned choreographers on groundbreaking work that expands the horizons of both the kids, and the modern dance world giving the kids an opportunity to understand and experience a diverse array of styles and artistic viewpoints. Dancewave Company has performed works by Paul Taylor, Twyla Tharp, Trisha Brown, Mark Morris, Garth Fagan, David Dorfman, Doug Varone, Bill T. Jones, Donald Byrd, Meredith Monk, Susan Marshall, Donald McKayle, Carla Maxwell (Jose Limon based), Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Andrea Miller and Nathan Trice. The company has been invited to perform at venues such as the Governor's Arts Awards, Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New Museum, Bay Street Theatre, Joyce Theatre, PS 122, The Brooklyn Children's Museum, The Kitchen, DanceNOW Festival, City Park Foundation's Summerstage and on PBS. In 2010, the Dancewave Company was invited to represent all of the US by performing in the world-renowned Aberdeen International Youth Festival in Scotland.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Dancewave seeks a Dancewave Company Coach to assist the Dancewave Company with artistic, technical, social, emotional and administrative aspects of company life. Dancewave Company works closely and directly with Dancewave’s Executive & Artistic Director and Dancewave Company resident choreographers for the year.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serve as rehearsal assistant and attending all company rehearsals (Wednesdays and Saturday afternoons) and performances.

Learn all choreography and assist dancers in technical and stylistic aspects of the work.

Run rehearsal warm-ups as needed.

Communicate weekly with parents, dancers and choreographers about rehearsal and performance schedules.

Address student behavior issues and company conflicts with the Executive/Artistic Director.

Take regular attendance and report back to Dancewave’s Director of Education weekly.

Take costume inventory and organize costumes for performances.

REQUIRED SKILLS & CREDENTIALS:

Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Dance Performance or Dance Education

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Excellent organizational skills

Regular access to email and ability to communicate regularly with company members during the week

Experience working with teenagers from diverse racial/ethnics and socioeconomic backgrounds

Deep knowledge of the dance world, particularly the modern field

Understanding and cognizance of the different dance styles and processes

PREFERRED SKILLS:

Master’s degree in Dance Performance or Dance Education

Experience with conflict resolution
