KaNu Dance Theater began performing in 2003. The company has performed at Hofstra University, Brooklyn Museum, Barnard College, Columbia University, St. Francis College, the NYC French Institute, Henry Street Settlement Theater, and the Brooklyn Library just to name a few. In 2009 the company collaborated with “Artists for Peace” creating a concert titled “An end to Poverty” to benefit “KIVA”. KaNu has also performed at the Bronx Academy for art and dances’ BAAD! Ass Women Choreographer’s Festival’s and Blacktino Festival’s of 2008, 2009 and 2010. In response to the January 12, 2010 earthquake that took place in Haiti, KaNu participated in a variety of concerts, fundraisers, festivals, memorials and conferences for aid in earthquake relief. The company performed at the Turkish Mission to the United Nations as a part of the Rebuilding Haiti: Against All Odds conference, and at the City Hall of New York’s 2010 Haitian Flag Day celebration. In the fall of 2010 KaNu Dance Theater partnered with Haiti Cultural Exchange on “Selebrasyon!” an all day festival celebrating Haitian art and artists of Haitian descent. The dancers of KaNu were invited to travel to Columbia, Maryland by the “Build Haiti Foundation” in January 2011 and January 2012 to commemorate and remember the victims of the 2010 earthquake. The company was also invited to perform at the Haitian Embassy in Washington, DC in celebration of “Passport Day 2011”. This past June KaNu Dance Theater was invited to perform for Haiti’s president “Michele Martelly” and NBA player “Samuel Dalembert” at a benefit concert to support their foundation; “The Samuel Dalembert foundation” in Haiti. Recently the members of KaNu were invited to work with students at Manhattanville College as a part of the University’s “Understanding Cultures Through Dance Series”. Most recently, in November 2011 KaNu Dance Theater performed their first full company concert titled “Shadow of Pearl” to a sold out audience at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center.
The mission of KaNu Dance Theater is to promote change and peace in Haiti and around the world by sharing with the world; Haitian heritage, history, culture, and educating our spectators through contemporary, modern, and Afro-Caribbean dance. KaNu is an abbreviation for “Ka Pa Nou” in Haitian-Kreyol which means “Our Situation.” KaNu Dance Theater hopes to be able to continue to share “Our Situation” or better yet “KaNu” through dance, theater and song.
