AUDITION FOR SAM KIM: NEW DANCE WORK

Thursday, February 21st
4-7pm

MMDG
3 Lafayette Ave. (corner of Rockwell Place)
Brooklyn, NY

"To exercise power without exerting it, to be detached and powerful, to be there, silent and indestructible as gods, that is to be a god and why there are gods."

-Alexander Trocchi
"Young Adam"

Looking for 2-3 performers for a new dance work that will premiere in NYC. Looking for performers who possess massive range who can traverse the spectrum of absorption, concentration, complete abandon, precision and technical command. The quality and texture of a performer's engagement with the material given, combined with a certain kind of seething curiosity and intelligence is everything to me, and an open and generous attitude toward receiving direction is critical. Physical trappings and gender aren't particularly important. Neither is being reputable. Or non-reputable.

Performers MUST have availability March 11-29 for a residency at Baryshnikov Arts Center.

Please arrive warm and ready, bring a resume and rsvp to cinema_sam@hotmail.com if you are attending.

Please spread the word far and wide to anyone who might be interested. I am interested in seeing the widest swath of performers possible. Thank you.

Sam Kim makes dances that focus on the margins of culture and behavior, creating space for vulnerability while courting danger. Her work has been presented and commissioned by The Kitchen, Dance Theater Workshop, Performance Space 122 and Danspace Project multiple times, in addition to other progressive venues across the country such as Highways Performance Space, Studio 303, the Unknown Theater and Bryant Lake Bowl Theater.
Sam's work has been supported by awards from organizations such as the Lucky Star Foundation, the MAP Fund, the Bossak/Heilbron Charitable Foundation, Dance Theater Workshop, Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Movement Research, and the 92nd St Y Harkness Dance Center. Sam was the recipient of a Spring 2010 Dance Theater Workshop Outer/Space Creative Residency at Brazil, a 2007-09 Brooklyn Arts Exchange Dance Artist-in-Residence and a 2004-05 Movement Research Artist-in-Residence.
Sam has been awarded residencies at The MacDowell Colony (2012), Djerassi Resident Artists Program (2013) and Baryshnikov Arts Center (2013) to develop her latest evening-length work, “Benediction for Lesser Souls.” “Benediction” will be a ritualistic work that reveals the secret and magic rites of liminal creatures in exile, obliquely inspired by Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” and the work of conceptual clothing designer Martin Margiela.
