Merce Cunningham Trust Workshop Audition: December 2, 2 - 4pm
Merce Cunningham Trust Workshop
Interscape (2000) led by Andrea Weber, MCDC 2004 - 2011
AUDITION
December 2
City Center - 130 West 56th Street, Studio 5
2:00pm - 4:00pm
(A complimentary technique class at 12:15pm is offered and recommended prior to the audition.)
Workshop Dates: December 9 - 13, 2013
Interscape is a forty-four minute work for fourteen dancers (only selected excerpts will be taught during the workshop). The piece features duets and trios, opening with a duet for two women, with the phrases performed sequentially and in isolation. Other themes in the choreography include: a head thrown back, arms linked, back to back dancing and shifts of weight, sometimes in the pelvis alone. The piece ends quietly as a dancer walks on to join three other dancers, who, after another trio, come to rest at three corners of the stage. Of this closing moment, Cunningham remarked, "It's as if [the dancer] has entered to begin, and the curtain closes."
Andrea Weber performed in Interscape before it left the company repertory and revived sections of the work at the recent installation at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The music is a John Cage solo for cello, One^8, which can also be performed with an orchestra. Robert Rauschenberg designed the decor --- the front curtain was comprised of a montage of smudged black and white photographs, and a backdrop with the same images from the front curtain, duplicated in color. The dancers wore multihued leotards, also designed by Rauschenberg.
