Mad Circle Dance Call

MaD CIRCLE: Call for Choreographers

Can you take something old — something mired in tradition and expectations — and make it new? Can forms calcified through glacial evolution be revolutionized? These are the driving impulses behind MaD (Music and Dance) Circle, a collaboration between Composer's Voice and curators Callie Hatchett and Erin Bomboy. We seek to take the outmoded forms of Tango and Waltz, associated with the mores of the ballroom and rooted in sexist implications, and revitalize them for a new generation through fresh choreographic ideas and rejuvenated music structures.

MaD Circle will consist of two concerts, which will take place at Jan Hus Church at 1pm on Sundays, July 13th and August 10th.  We invite choreographers, both established and emerging, to submit applications for participation. If selected, each choreographer will be randomly assigned a piece of music from 2-5 minutes in length to choreograph as she or he sees fit. This music has been curated from a selection of compositions especially composed for this project from working composers. We encourage creativity and risk-taking.
