ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF DANCE (Job code: 0116)

UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON DANCE PROGRAM

 

Position Description: Full-time, nine month, tenure track faculty position

Position to begin: September 16, 2015

Salary: Commensurate with experience and includes full benefits package

 

Responsibilities: Must be able to teach at least one of the following forms at all levels: ballet, contemporary, jazz/musical theater, non-western or social dance forms. Must also be able to teach at least one of the following: Cross-cultural Dance Studies, Dance History, Composition, Research Methods, Teaching Methods. There are also opportunities to teach in other areas of specialization.

 

Additional responsibilities include concert direction, student mentoring, department service, participation on MFA supervisory committees, and other duties as assigned. Willingness to work collaboratively with faculty and to mentor students from a wide range of disciplines, as well as cultural and academic backgrounds is essential. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service.

Qualifications: MFA or PhD, an emerging record of creative and/or scholarly activities, and prior university teaching experience.

The UW Dance Program offers a dance minor, and a dance major with options in

Creative Studies and Dance Studies culminating in a Bachelor of Arts degree,

and a Master of Fine Arts degree. The program serves approximately 40

undergraduate dance majors, 80 minors, 6 graduate students and over 900

non-major students who enroll in dance courses each quarter. The Program is

staffed by six full-time faculty, a part-time Music Director and Production

Manager and several part-time instructors. Facilities include three large

dance studios; a state of the art 238-seat studio theatre and the 1200 seat

Meany Theatre.

 

Students pursuing the dance major investigate dance as an art form and as a

cultural practice, and are given the opportunity to explore dance from

multiple perspectives. Ballet and modern dance are the primary techniques

offered, along with classes in non-western dance forms, somatic practices,

social dance and jazz/musical theatre dance. The Dance Program produces four

concerts annually. Additional performance and choreographic opportunities

are available through concerts sponsored by the Dance Student Association.

In keeping with the liberal arts setting, students are encouraged to find

the convergence between dance and other academic and artistic pursuits that

interest them. Faculty and advisors work closely with students to guide them

on the educational track that best serves their career goals. The

undergraduate curriculum serves as preparation for graduate study,

performance careers, dance related occupations such as physical therapy and

dance therapy and other fields demanding strong communication skills,

creativity, commitment, and the ability to work collaboratively and

Seattle is home to the Pacific Northwest Ballet, the Seattle Opera, Seattle

Symphony as well as a thriving contemporary dance community that includes

Spectrum Dance Theater and Velocity Dance Center. The UW World Series at

Meany Theatre, On the Boards, and the Seattle Theatre Group bring

internationally acclaimed dance companies to Seattle on an ongoing basis.
