Teaching Artists (Multiple positions available)

 

Reflecting its commitment to the New York City community, the Mark Morris Dance Group offers a wide range of arts in education programming to public schools, public housing and community centers and at the Mark Morris Dance Center.  We are currently accepting applications for teaching artists in the field of dance that are committed to working with educators, young people, and the community.

MMDG’s Arts-in-Education Programs include:

 - The American Dance Project is a 10-week residency designed for Middle and High School students.  American dance forms have a rich history and reflect the diversity and hybridization of many cultures.  Teaching artists will guide students through history of the contributions of the African aesthetic influenced the creation of such American dance forms as the Lindy Hop, The Cakewalk and the Charleston and continue through time to contemporary jazz and hip-hop of today.

 - Special Kids Dance: teaching Creative Dance, Dance Fundamentals, and Tap Dance to students with Special Needs. 

 - Dance Integration Program:  Lead workshops with collaborating schools or educators in arts-integrated curriculum. 

 - Technique & Movement classes which include but are not limited to the following styles: Creative Dance, Ballet, Modern Dance and Composition, Stretch & Core Strengthening, Restorative Movement for Seniors, Tap Dance, African dance, Jazz, Hip-Hop (commercial, Popping & Locking), 18th Century Baroque, Swing, Hula,

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Reporting to the Director of Education and School Director, teaching artists are practicing dance artists who meet the following requirements:

- At least 2 years of experience dancing teaching to a diverse age group within an educational settings
- Strong knowledge of content in the  genre of dance
- Ability to work with live and recorded music
- Commitment and interest in working with young people in typically under-resourced communities
- Strong communication skills
- Adaptable to different settings in the public teaching arena
- Ability to co-teach/team-teach
- Willingness to attend planning meetings with collaborating school/organization
- Ability to work directly with collaborating school or educator to co-plan and/or co-teach
- Organized, punctual, and enthusiastic about sharing his/her passion with young people.\

Cover letter should include a statement commenting on the candidate’s desire to work both for MMDG and in the field of arts-in- education, reflect on the candidate’s personal philosophy and approach to teaching in the arts, as well as any additional skills you may have that would contribute to your craft.  In addition, applicant should respond to the following:

1. Describe your teaching experience.  Please include all styles of dance, ages and level, in-school, and at private dance studios, etc.         

2. Please list any experience you have had with English Language Learners or with Students with Special Needs.

3. Please submit a sample lesson plan.
