Periapsis Music and Dance call for collaborative works

Opportunity: Periapsis Music and Dance is offering paid performance opportunities to choreographers and companies who are working with composers and/or live music.  The first round of performances will take place in March, April, and May, 2016, at the new GK ArtsCenter in DUMBO, Brooklyn.  This opportunity is not a collaboration with Periapsis’s resident company, nor do we match choreographers with composers for this series.  We want to discover and give exposure to the many innovative projects and collaborations that are already happening in the community!

Applications are due December 20, 2015, at 11:59 pm ET.

Dates:  Selected artists from this call will present their work on one of the following dates:
- Saturday, March 12 (studio performance) (please note date change)
- Sunday, March 13 (studio performance) (please note date change)
- Saturday, April 2 (studio performance)
- Sunday, April 3 (studio performance)
- Saturday, May 14 (theater performance)
- Sunday, May 15 (theater performance)

Applicants will indicate on the form which of the above dates they could perform, and all artists must be available for the full day.  There will be modest tech time, plus two performances on the same day.  Depending on the number of applicants and programming decisions, some of the above dates may not be used.

Artist eligibility: This opportunity is open to any choreographer or dance company based in the New York City area.  Individuals must be eligible to work in the US.  You must create a free login on our website to access the application.

Work eligibility: To be eligible for this series, the work(s) presented must  have been created in collaboration with a composer or sound artist and/or be performed with live music.  If the music is written for musicians it must be performed live; recordings may only be used when that’s the nature of the work (like a sound score or work for electronics).  The choreographer will be responsible for providing proof of permissions for use of all protected music or other components.

Here are some eligible scenarios:

- You collaborated with a composer, who will perform their own music live.
- You collaborated with a composer, whose music will be performed live by other musicians.
- You collaborated with a composer who created a work that only exists as a recording or sound file.
- Your work is set to public domain music that will be performed live.
- Your work is set to protected music that will be performed live, and you’ve obtained a grand rights license for the music from its copyright holder.

Here are some ineligible scenarios:

- You collaborated with a composer who wrote the work for live instruments, but you want to perform with a recording.
- You created your own audio track by editing and/or combining existing recordings.
- You’re using music from an online database of royalty-free tracks for dance.

Works (or sets) may range from 7 minutes to 35 minutes in duration, though 10-20 minutes is ideal.  Please see below for duration ranges and corresponding artist stipends.

Compensation:  All choreographers/companies will receive a stipend based on the length of their performance (to be paid within 14 days of the date of the program), as well as basic video and some publicity.  Please visit http://periapsismusicanddance.org/opportunities/ for more information.

About the venue: GK ArtsCenter is located in DUMBO, Brooklyn, off the F, A/C, and 2/3 lines.  Studios are approximately 2000 square feet each, and the theater stage is about 38? wide by 42? deep.  Piano is available.  Basic lighting (theater only) and sound will be available.  Any large equipment or special tech requirements must be approved in advance.
