Dallas’ premiere modern dance company, Dallas Black Dance Theatre seeks a highly motivated and experienced creative individual with a proven track record to serve as Artistic Director of the Dallas Black Dance Theatre (DBDT). The ideal candidate will have strong demonstrated experience in choreography, management and programming a professional dance company. The ultimate candidate will be an entrepreneurial thinker for artistic excellence and audience development in the field of modern dance. The ideal person will be rooted in the business acumen of a successful dance season and execution of touring programs. We seek a person capable of propelling a dance company into the next stage of its artistic prominence.

Job Purpose/Scope/Responsibilities

The Artistic Director is the chief artistic visionary of Dallas Black Dance Theatre, charged with building upon the spirit, energy and aesthetic vision of DBDT’s founder, the legendary Ann Williams. He/she will develop and articulate a clear, unique, compelling and imaginative artistic vision for the organization—a vision that will fuse together the distinctive and popular elements of DBDT’s repertoire with new and original creations. The Artistic Director is responsible for DBDT’s artistic profile and maintaining the artistic quality of the entire organization, DBDT, DBDT II, the Academy, education and outreach programs, in a manner that exemplifies DBDT’s core mission and values. He/she will be actively involved in representing high-level development solicitations and work closely with the Executive Director in this regard.

He/she will report to the Board of Directors, be expected to regularly attend and report at the Board of Directors meetings and proactively communicate timely and appropriate information on artistic matters.  He/she shall maintain an open and cordial relationship with the board.  He/she will ensure the artistic vision is integrated with the strategic plan for the organization.  He/she will adhere to the organization structure set by the Board of Directors and support the policies of DBDT.  He/she will insure the artistic program and plan is developed and executed within the organization’s budget and business plan.
