SEEKING CHOREOGRAPHERS for ‘TRANSLATE (voices of dance)’ on JUNE 29 & 30 2017 presented by DIXON PLACE and curated by Jessica Chen of J CHEN PROJECT

SUBMISSION DEADLINE:  April 3, 2017

WHAT IS TRANSLATE:  ‘TRANSLATE (voices of dance)’ is a choreographer’s festival presented by Dixon Place and curated by J CHEN PROJECT’s Artistic Director, Jessica Chen.  With an emphasis to support the NYC dance community at large, there will be program activities scheduled where all applicants are invited to attend.  Past activities have included a creative process workshop, salon-styled discussions, improv jams and more.  Activities will be open to all applicants, even whose work is not selected.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE:  Both emerging and establish artists will be curated into the festival, giving emerging artists a unique chance to meet and interact with establish artists.  Artists must possess a keen desire to develop and explore their work with their peers in the context of this festival.  Artists will be selected based on the quality of the work they submit, commitment to the work and openness to engage with the community. 

CURATOR:  Jessica Chen is an inspirational speaker, international teacher and Artistic Director of J CHEN PROJECT.  Chen received a B.A. in Global Studies from the University of California in Santa Barbara and continued her dance training in NYC at The Ailey School and Earl Mosley’s Institute of the Arts, where she received a full scholarship. 

She had the honor of choreographing and directing a Featured Float in the 2015 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.  In addition, she was featured in an article for both The Huffington Post and 2015 October Issue of Dance Magazine.  She has taught master classes, workshops and seminars at institutions such as Semester at Sea, Yale University, Boston University, Rosie’s Theater Kids (NYC), Do-One (Japan), Jazz DU Funk (China), Mt. Holyoke, and Orange County School of the Arts, as well as her alma mater.

 

J CHEN PROJECT is a modern dance company based in NYC, founded in 2008, exploring identity within the human experience through creation, performance, mentoring and inspiring young artists to share their voice.

 

SUBMISSION FEE:  There is a $20 submission fee

 

PERFORMANCE STIPEND:  If selected, there will be NO production fee charged.  Choreographers will receive a performance stipend and networking opportunities with fellow choreographers.
