Two Multicultural Art + Performance Opportunities

Two Multicultural Art + Performance Opportunities

THE CREATORS COLLECTIVE is seeking artists to present work as part of two events we're producing this spring. Take a look at the two opportunities below and send an email to gina@thecreatorscollective.org if you are interested in participating.

Deadline to apply: Wednesday, April 20th

(1) Brooklyn – Guiyang Artist Exchange

Three artists from Brooklyn will engage in creative exchange with three artists from Guiyang, China. Artists in both cities will first convene to discuss their relationship with their community and the urban landscape of their city. Two short videos will be created, translated and then sent to the other set of artists, who will then develop a work of art in response to these stories. One consolidated video will then be created to bring together the stories of all six artists and their relationship to the cities they inhabit. The project will culminate with a viewing of the video and an artist talkback in both cities.

Timeline: 2 months starting ASAP (exact dates TBD)

(2) An Evening of Performance Inspired by Rawiya

Rawiya – the first Middle Eastern female photography collective – presents In Her Absence I Created Her Image, an exhibit for Open Source Gallery. In collaboration with Open Source Gallery, and inspired by RawiyaTHE CREATORS COLLECTIVE is organizing a series of performances from dance and theater artists to be performed at the gallery on Saturday, May 21.

The artists of Rawiya come together to show the world what it cannot always see: people not as caricatured victims, but intensely human, with an entire spectrum of vulnerabilities and intricacies they hold wholly their own.

In that vein, the collection of performances we are curating should aim to connect with the following:

- A response to one of the four photographs in the exhibit*
- A previously developed work that connects to the meaning of Rawiya: “she who tells a story”
- Rawiya’s goal of dispelling stereotypes to encourage a more compassionate and empathetic worldview

Given the intimacy of the space, we can only present solos and duets at this performance.

While Rawiya focuses specifically on the Middle East, we are interested in presenting work from artists that fit into any of the above categories, regardless of background, gender or other cultural affiliation.

To submit work: please send an email with your name, artistic discipline, a work sample (of either the work you’d like to perform or a previous work), and a short description of the work and its relationship to the theme(s) of this event.

* Themes within the exhibit include: access to education and the role of literacy in improving the lives of Arab women, the paradoxes and humor resulting from everyday existence within a 47-year occupation, child labor conditions as a result of the Egyptian economic crisis, and fighting hypermasculine stereotypes surrounding the Arab male.
