MOPDC's Winter Intensive: Dance, Choreograph, Envision
January 14 – January 16, 2017 @ Barnard College, NYC
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend

MOPDC's weekend Winter Intensive offers intermediate/advanced dancers the opportunity to explore and connect with various dances of the African Diaspora, tools for creating socially conscious choreography, and experiential insight as to ways in which Dances of the African Diaspora are incorporated in Dance Theater.

3 days of rotating Master Technique Classes in: Contemporary, Afro-House, Samba, Cuban Contemporary Dance, Bomba, Afro-Haitian and Danza Azteca. Workshops led by Guest Artists + MOPDC company members including Artistic Director Joya Powell (2016 Outstanding Emerging Choreographer Bessie Award recipient).

Choreography Lab - Creating Socially Conscious Dance Theater Choreography facilitated by MOPDC company members. Each day will conclude with 3 hours of collaborative group choreography making or solo work, where participants will be lead through MOPDC's best practices in creating Socially Conscious Choreography.

OR

MOPDC Company Repertory - Our company repertory classes will offer participants the opportunity to get a hands on experience in our process of creating socially conscious choreography while learning excerpts of our current choreography. Dancers will get the opportunity to perform these excerpts in our studio showing. For students not interested in creating their own choreography.

The Intensive will culminate in a free informal studio showing of student work and excerpts of MOPDC company repertory. Participants will get the chance to discuss their process and receive audience feedback. Monday, January 16th @ 7pm.

$175 + tax via Paypal for the full intensive and showing
$80+ tax via Paypal for the 8 technique classes only

MOPDC's Winter Intensive is for dancers and choreographers 18+ who are interested in embodying various dances of the African Diaspora as well as envisioning and creating evocative Dance Theater choreography that addresses sociocultural issues as a means to educate, inform and ignite dialogue.

Past Guest Artists include: Nia Love, Katiti King, Jennifer Archibald, Maguette Camara, Sekou Heru, Dandha da Hora and Benny Simon.
